I didn't make it through the pandemic unscathed, but I did keep learning, improving and generally progressing during the lockdowns and general chaos that was the last 3 years. That sense of progression came to a halt in 2022, and with it BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-9039551851532086812018-04-05T07:16:00.000-07:002018-04-05T07:23:11.258-07:00#BeerSK - Post Mortem
I had intended for the #lowrezjam to be a singular excursion, as I knew that some projects at work were about to ramp up. However, twitter alerted me to Bar SK's first birthday celebration and accompanying game jam. I've always been interested in Bar SK; It's a bar in Melbourne that's themed around game development, particularly experimental games. I haven't been yet, but it's definitely on myBigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-41405858861416013242018-03-26T07:09:00.000-07:002018-03-26T07:09:40.756-07:00#LowRezJam 2017 - Post Mortem
Seeing as it's been longer than 6 months ago, and I've had significant time to reflect, it's probably time to do the post-mortem for this game. Around August I was both extremely busy and extremely frustrated and wanted something small I could complete and get some satisfaction from. By sheer coincidence, a new #LowRezJam had started around the same time. I'd made Shogun Assassin, my most BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-12948738281983063132015-10-27T09:26:00.001-07:002015-10-27T09:27:12.458-07:00My baby takes the morning
I drew a train. It was super exhausting. Also I haven't blogged for a while, so may as well try and get back into the habbit. Realistically though, we all know I can't post much until after this project is complete.BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-84817069056844972482015-05-13T08:21:00.002-07:002015-05-13T08:22:10.268-07:00It's all a front!
After much lead up: The front page. You can also see it here. It's complete with slider game and background previously discussed on the blog, plus a news slider and twitter feed. I'm pretty happy with it, and it matches (in a round-about way) to some concept art my constant co-conspirator Drew Fellows made for me. I was hoping to push this style through the rest of the website tonight as well,BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-80346862368009576132015-05-11T09:47:00.004-07:002015-05-11T09:49:36.808-07:00Slide into oblivion
Check it out here in the meantime.
I wouldn't say the slider project ended up spiraling out of control, but I ended up doing more with it than I was originally intending. In terms of scope, it's about the same level of simplicity (aside from a couple of small additions), but it's more a case of exploring and learning some additional aspects of GameMaker I hadn't looked at previously. While I BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-80953664981854474722015-05-08T08:00:00.001-07:002015-05-08T08:05:56.850-07:00So why don't you slide?
Taking a decent screenshot while trying to show off something that moves is a little tricky and often ends up with something that looks confusing and/or generally shit, as demonstrated above. How about you just check out where it's at here.
I had thought this would only really take a day or two, and that's mostly true... Part 2 of the "update the website" thing I started a couple of posts back. Originally I had just thought about using screenshots for the slider, but since all the games I've made so far have been different resolutions, it didn't quite work out. What I've ended up doing is re-purposing the sprites from the game and rearranging them into something that represents the game, but also fits the sameBigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-43776985626947794582015-05-04T07:33:00.002-07:002015-05-04T07:33:53.290-07:00CannonPaul #1 - Proof of prototype

So... it's time. Sure, I have stuff that I've started previously, but this comes from a place that's been on my mind as of recent. Plus, it's super quick to make and will work on keyboard, mouse or touchscreen relatively easily.
The concept is this: It's a circus and people need to be entertained. After running out of other options, the only thing BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-51799839299599391022015-05-01T09:45:00.000-07:002015-05-01T09:45:08.242-07:00Poetry CornerSo, this will not be a standard kind of post I'll be doing again anytime soon, but I ended up staying up till something like 3:30 in the morning doing this and I wanted to get more mileage out of it than just it's intended use. Maybe it's some kind of new low for the blog, or maybe it's some terrifying new and interesting direction it's going in. Or maybe I'm just hanging around the self-styled BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-87056723797343245132015-04-29T03:36:00.001-07:002015-04-30T08:30:24.270-07:00EXTERMINATE
One more left over thing from Movember... This was for my friend and Fernando duet partner Deb who I met at the Adelaide Ukulele Appreciation Society. She wanted a pixel version of herself playing Ukulele. I didn't know much else about her accept that she has a little dog named Davros and loves Dr. Who, so I chucked that all in there too.BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-16888315834621478012015-04-27T06:47:00.000-07:002015-04-27T06:49:49.276-07:00Robot Reprise
Something else I've been working on recently but have been slow to complete is my website redesign. A lot of the content/links are in place but I've still got to pretty it up/make it look more like me. I wanted something for a background image. In a mock-up Drew did for me he used this really, really old thing I did here. I thought it would be cool to revisit the idea, if only to see how farBigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-69385176756205944422015-04-24T09:22:00.001-07:002015-04-24T09:22:33.306-07:00Proof of Concept
Last post, I talked about my intentions of maybe doing some Youtube videos... and about how I didn't just want to make the same Let's Play/PewDiePie/MLG/screaming-into-a-microphone kind of videos that everyone is making. Now here I am, having made one of those exact videos.
This is not a prototype of things to come, just something of a proof of concept. While I'd done a tiny little bit ofBigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-83958053391010841562015-04-22T07:51:00.002-07:002015-04-22T07:51:19.182-07:00Problems
I have this problem where over the last few years I've picked up way too many games. More games than I have time to play. So many games in fact, that when it comes time to play something I'm completely paralyzed by choice.
I also have this problem where I hadn't really done any file I/O in GameMaker yet, or tried out the new internal font stuff, Or indeed made anything of note in it recently.BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-16538021125927932312015-04-20T06:17:00.000-07:002015-04-20T06:17:40.763-07:00Fly You Fools!
Meanwhile, the left over stuff from Movember continues... Legendary modest hustler James donated for a picture of him and Gandalf fighting the Balrog. I resisted all my urges to have it be Balrog from Street Fighter instead, but at the same time I totally withheld passing it on until his birthday. Now, here it is, minus spelling mistakes and with a couple of minor erasures.

It's a new year, so that deserves a new post. Last year was a mixed bag. Some things went really well (Ascii Bird and Shogun Assassin), while other things went pretty poorly (Lowest post count for a year ever, generally the entire second half of the year). If nothing else, with a bar so low it'll only make it easier to improve on this year.
The pics today aren't exactly new... I did both of BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-13404430016349238532014-10-20T21:46:00.001-07:002014-10-20T21:46:44.760-07:00Pixel Metal Madness

I had a spare four hours on the weekend so I thought I'd follow through with a plan I had last post. I decide to do a quick little jam to get better at making games in shorter time frames. I didn't want to embarrass myself straight up so I decided to start with something easy.
I figured I may as well start where video games start. I also realised that despite it being the general starting BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-72749859131289296482014-08-04T23:49:00.000-07:002014-08-04T23:49:03.061-07:00Adelaide Game Jam #1 - Post Mortem
So once again I've kind of gone ahead and done a game jam without doing a blog post about it first (or a blog post about anything for that matter). I did live tweet it though, if that even counts.
This time it was for the Adelaide Game Jam being hosted by Jamalaide, which is a 48 (but more like 36) hour jam that's done mostly locally. Previously, I'd also done Ludum Dare with them and BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-18494352552582361882014-06-09T00:41:00.000-07:002014-06-09T00:42:36.509-07:00LowRezJam #1 - Post-Mortem
I kind of failed to do a blog posting about it because I'm terrible at self promotion/social media, but I ended up doing something for the LowRezJam. After the Ludum Dare jam I wasn't really feeling too great about game dev skills and I really wanted opportunity to rectify that. I kind of felt like none of the games I'd made so far were very "true to myself" or "an indication of what I'm aboutBigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-61489357550887801032014-06-05T09:07:00.000-07:002014-06-05T09:07:45.355-07:00... In the kitchen.
A friend of mine was after a pinup style pose for a baking stall she was planning on running at the local markets, so I decided to give it a shot. If you're ever in Katherine, NT keep an eye out for it!
I hadn't drawn anything proper/non-game related for a while so it felt good to get back into it. I've also been doing some other stuff. I should probably post about that too...BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-80692765254667643622014-05-01T08:20:00.002-07:002014-05-01T08:21:15.855-07:00Ludum Dare 29 #2 - Post-Mortem
Ludum Dare 29 was my fourth jam this year, and definitely the one with the toughest restrictions. LD is a 48 hour competition (or a 72 hour casual team jam, but who wants to be a filthy casual?) which, compared to the time-frames of other jams I've done so far, proved to be the biggest challenge. This is also the first jam I've entered where the theme wasn't directly related to the purpose of BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-61725868410249740782014-04-28T22:16:00.000-07:002014-04-28T22:16:21.770-07:00Ludum Dare 29 #1 - Agents & Assassins
This last weekend I competed in Ludum Dare, which is a 48 hour international game jam. This time though, I did it with the folks of Jamalaide, Adelaide's own game jam group. There wasn't a very big turn out but it was a pretty fun experience nonetheless, if not also stressful and busy.
The jam theme was "Beneath the surface", which wasn't the most interesting theme but led to some interestingBigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5446169029581267164.post-23935769541204393302014-04-05T08:18:00.001-07:002014-04-05T08:19:53.256-07:00Repeat After Me #1- Programmer art ahoy
After the Cyberpunk Jam I decided to continue with previous blog name-drop Drew Fellows on another game of his own design, which is now "Repeat After Me". It seemed like a relatively easy build, but at the same time was going to offer a chance to learn some other features of GameMaker that I hadn't got around to learning yet, so it seemed like a fun little project to do.
I had intended to do BigStompyRobotshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02833905747763334261noreply@blogger.com0
